The Ghost of the Mason: Why Your Patch Job Looks Like a Scar I remember walking onto a site in Philadelphia where a homeowner had spent ten grand on a ‘brick wall restoration.’ To the untrained eye, the wall was solid. To me, it looked like a butcher had tried to perform heart surgery with […]
The Ghost of the Arch: Why Your Masonry is Failing I recently stood before a 1920s Tudor revival that was weeping. Not metaphorically, but literally. Water was bleeding out of a brick arch restoration that had been butchered by a “jack-of-all-trades” just three years prior. The homeowner thought they were getting a deal on tuckpointing […]
The Scars of the High-Speed Blade: A Forensic Look at Masonry Sabotage I recently stood before a 1920s Tudor revival that looked like it had been through a meat grinder. The homeowner was proud; he’d hired a crew that ‘worked fast’ to prep the walls for tuckpointing. But as I ran my fingers over the […]
The Forensic Reality of a Failing Facade I remember a specific structural masonry inspection on a Federal-style townhouse where the homeowner was convinced the building was simply ‘settling.’ They saw a series of hairline fractures along the brick quoin repair area and assumed a little caulk would fix it. But when I inserted my digital […]
The Topography of the Wall: Why the Bead Matters I stood on a swaying scaffold thirty feet up, squinting through a 12mm borescope at a client’s historic facade. The homeowner thought it was just a hairline crack snaking through a corner. But when I put my scope inside the cavity, I saw the structural steel […]
The Discipline of the Grout Bag The first time I saw a rookie try to grout a stone facade restoration without a bag, it looked like a gray landslide had occurred. My mentor, a man who had more limestone dust in his lungs than oxygen, grabbed my wrist and forced me to listen. He didn’t […]
The Forensic Reality of the Hairline Crack The homeowner thought it was just a hairline crack, a minor blemish on a century-old facade that had survived wars and winters. But when I put my scope inside that void, I didn’t see a simple settlement issue; I saw a structural crime scene. The structural steel lintel […]
The Forensic Reality of a ‘Hairline’ Crack The homeowner thought it was just a hairline crack, a minor aesthetic nuisance on a 1920s bungalow. But when I put my scope inside that fissure, I saw the structural steel lintel was rusted to dust, a victim of ‘rust jacking’ where expanding iron oxide exerts up to […]
The Death of the Facade: Why Superficial Repairs Are a Death Sentence I recently stood in front of a 1914 Victorian where the homeowner was beaming with pride over a recent crumbling mortar joint repair. To his untrained eye, it looked clean. To me, it looked like a crime scene. A previous contractor had performed […]
The Forensic Reality: A Tale of Two Chemistries The homeowner stood on his porch, pointing at the base of his 1920s Tudor chimney. He thought it was just a hairline crack, a minor aesthetic nuisance. But when I slid my fiber-optic scope inside that void, I didn’t see solid masonry. I saw a structural nightmare: […]
