Saving your stonework when others fall short.
Saving your stonework when others fall short.
The Forensic Scene: When the Earth Decides to Move In The homeowner pointed to a thin, vertical hairline crack in the mortar joint, tucked behind a stack of old paint cans. ‘It’s just a little dampness during the spring thaw,’ he told me, wiping a smudge of dust off his expensive flannel shirt. I didn’t […]
You can tell a lot about a house’s soul by the way it cracks. I was standing in a crawlspace in a district where the homes haven’t seen a new face since the 1920s, and the smell was unmistakable: the damp, metallic scent of ancient lime and the heavy, wet-dog aroma of saturated clay. The […]
The Forensic Scene: When a Hairline is a Heart Attack The homeowner stood there, pointing a trembling finger at a thin, jagged line running vertically through her basement wall. She called it a ‘hairline crack.’ She thought a tube of caulk from the big-box store would fix it. But when I pulled out the borescope […]
The Weight of the World on a Four-Inch Footer I’ve spent forty years in the mud. I’ve seen the way a building breathes, and more importantly, the way it chokes. When you’ve buttered as many bricks as I have, you develop a sense for the subtle groan of a structure that’s losing its fight with […]
The Forensic Scene: When a Hairline Crack Becomes a Structural Grave The homeowner in the historic district of the city pointed at a vertical fracture in the basement wall. It was barely wide enough to slip a credit card into. ‘It’s just a hairline, right?’ he asked, hoping I’d tell him a bit of caulk […]
The Forensic Scene: When a Hairline Crack Becomes a Structural Grave The homeowner in the aging industrial corridor of the North End thought it was just a cosmetic nuisance—a slender, wandering hairline crack tracing its way through the mortar joints of her 1920s bungalow. But when I inserted the fiber-optic borescope into a bored-out weep […]
The forensic scene was one I had walked into hundreds of times in the Rust Belt, but this particular basement in a 1958 ranch-style home had a specific stench of damp lime and impending structural failure. The homeowner, a man who clearly spent too much time listening to ‘handyman’ podcasts, thought it was just a […]
The Forensic Eye: When the Bubble Lies The homeowner stood on the porch, arms crossed, pointing at a vertical fracture running through the soldier course above his garage. ‘My four-foot level says it’s plumb,’ he told me, a bit of defiance in his voice. I didn’t have the heart to tell him that a bubble […]
The Silent Heavyweight: Understanding the Physics of Foundation Failure I walked into a basement last spring that smelled like a cold tomb. The homeowner, a fellow who thought a coat of waterproof paint could stop the Atlantic Ocean, pointed to a horizontal fissure running the length of the north wall. ‘It’s just a settling crack,’ […]
The Anatomy of a Failing Foundation The homeowner thought it was just a hairline crack, a minor blemish on a concrete block wall in a basement that smelled of wet earth and old secrets. But when I put my scope inside that horizontal fissure, I saw the structural steel was rusted to dust, and the […]
