The homeowner pointed at a thin, dark line running along the third course of his basement wall. “It’s just a hairline crack,” he said, “I was going to slap some hardware-store epoxy in there and call it a day.” I didn’t say a word. I pulled out my six-foot level and pressed it against the masonry. The bubble wasn’t just off-center; it was in another zip code. The wall was bowing inward by nearly four inches.
